Midterm Reflection

So far in this design class, I have learned a multitude of new ways to approach work and have found confidence in my work that I have produced. I have taught my self with a just a little help from Paul that everything doesn't need to be perfect. Although most of the time I would like things to be perfect, it makes the art piece more interesting when it is not. The project that taught me a lot about different ways of making the same image was the Connotative and denotative project. I learned from my classmates and Paul of many different ways that were out of my comfort zone to make this little apple. The one where I took the piece of paper in the shape of an apple and painted on them and then used it as a stamp was fun and frustrating. Being a perfectionist, it was hard to make the painting do what I wanted, but it was also fun due to the fact it reminded me of my childhood with finger painting. Another iteration that I would not have thought of (which was Paul's idea) was to used the cutout scraps from one of my iterations and made an apple out of the straps. I have found it useful to approach work with an open mind and not just focus on one idea and know that it is okay to change things in the middle of the project. Learning what connotative and denotative art means, has let me dial into what the viewer is going to get when looking at the art. This course has given me enough structure but at the same time enough freedom to explore different ways of making art and some freedom to have a little fun with it. My favorite project so far has been the Point, Line, Plane project, I found it super fun and interesting to see the difference between the first and last photo, it was also a project where there was no way to make it perfect. Overall I have had an excellent first semester in Design, and I am looking forward to my next and LAST semester of high school.
